Printed on stereo viewer inside case, BC: MASCHER'S IMPROVED STEREOSCOPE \ PHILADA. \ PATENT \ MARCH 8TH 1853.
Entry 457 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): “Mascher’s Improved Stereoscope Philada. Patent March 8th 1852.” Unusual stereoscope case in fine condition with double daguerreotype of a bearded young man, seated by table. Both pictures taken on one silvered plate, while my first stereoscope daguerreotype #258, purchased at Exposition in 1940 from Mrs. Hobe, is taken of Mr. Hobe on two separate plates. No. 457 is daguerreotype of young man from the ancestral family of Mr. Stuart M. Story employed at Rhodes- Rhyne mfg. Co., in Lincolnton, N.C. and whose daguerreotype came from his old family home in Randleman, N.C. These stereoscope daguerreotype are very rare and valuable. There are only one or two of them in the Smithsonian Institution, I believe one small one with stereoscope dags. of trees in snow, and one empty stereo scope daguerreotype case. Cost of #457 ($8.00)
