Inscriptions Entry 677 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Fine half-plate dag. of a negro slave, supposed to have been the one who inspired Daniel Webster to give one of his speeches. Only negro in Southworth & Hawes collection, Boston Daguerreotypers of 1840. Obtained from Ray Phillips of Los Angeles. $3.25 cost. Print Shop owner who obtained last of Southworth and Hawes stuff. Richard B. Holman said concerning negro dags. in Southworth & Hawes Collection, “There is only one negro and one trying to prove that he was the runaway slave over whom Webster made on of his speeches. Webster came into the Hawes studio once when on his way to make the speech, so the idea is not fanciful. #677.
