Inscriptions Entry 424 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Beautiful daguerreotype of Indian Chief Maungwudgaus or Manngwadaus of the Ojebway Tribe of Indians. Rec’d from Eugenia Hales Smith of 1001 Broad St. Montourville, Pa. This dag. was in the well-known Indian collection of Miss Hannah Webster of Pennsdale, Penn., now deceased. She belonged to several Historical Societies and made a study of Indian lore, especially the Ojebway Tribe of Penn. which dwelt around her home town Pennsdale, and nearby Montoursville & Munoy. The History of the Ojebway Indians with especial reference to their “conversion to Christianity” by Peter Jones (Kahkewaquonaby) an Indian member of that tribe, gives story of tribe. In it the converted and fairly civilized Maungwadaus goes to Europe on a visit and from Paris writes his impression of the Europeans & Parisians to the author. This book is in the W.C. Library at Berkeley. On p.219 it describes letter written to author by Maungwadaus from Paris Oct. 19, 1854. Author born 1852, died 1856 (June 29). This daguerreotype cost [?] to make. I paid $15.00
