Inscribed in pencil and ink on verso, C: 8 \ JCS \ July 21 1880 \ "The Merchants' Shot Tower", corner \ of Fayette and Front Sts erected in \ 1828 on the site of the old Baptist \ meeting house, the first one of that \ denomination in the city. Its height \ is 246 ft. diameter at base 40 ft.- \ at top 20 ft. The walls are 4 1/2 ft thick \ at the base, tapering to 1 1/2 ft. at the \ summit. The masonry is beautiful \ and comprises 1,100,000 bricks
