TextTogether, Hill and Adamson photographed extensively in their native Scotland, with Hill acting as artistic director and Adamson as camera operator. Their photographs of the Firth of Forth fishing community in the Newhaven district of Edinburgh prominently feature fishwives. Known for their distinct style of dress, these women prepared their husbands’ catch, sold the goods at market, and managed the family finances. The community’s cooperative working methods, apparent in many of the photographs made by Hill and Adamson, helped to foster a more equal society.
