Persuading the peaceful Laotians to resist the Soviet-supplied Pathet Lao Communist guerillas was one of \ the New Frontier's first major headaches. In an effort to shore up the \ sagging Royal Laotian forces, President Kennedy put U.S. military \ advisors in uniform and sent U.S. helicopters and planes to transport \ and supply government troops. But as the years ends, the U.S. position \ is further weakened by the selection in Geneva of Souvanna Phouma, a \ "Neutralist", as the new premier of this geographically startegic country. \ Credit: Nicholas Tikhomiroff © MAGNUM \ Photos
