Panaflex Gold-II
ca. 1987
Gift of Panavision, Inc., 2023
Description35mm motion picture camera with shipping case
TextPanavision was founded in the early 1950s by Robert Gottschalk and several partners to create anamorphic projection lenses. In 1954, the company released its first product, the Super Panatar projection lens, and created a widescreen camera system, called Camera 65, for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In 1962, Panavision acquired the camera equipment division form MGM and became an equipment rental agency.
The first Panaflex camera was introduced in 1972. Nearly silent during operation, it eliminated the necessity to soundproof, of "blimp," the camera. With this advantage, Panaflex became the camera of choice in Hollywood. The Panaflex Gold II accepted all of the earlier camera's accessories—lenses and film magazines—and was the first camera of its type to use easily replaceable circuit boards.
