TextFrom 1994 to 2004, Bertien van Manen visited the homes of immigrants to Europe and asked them to provide her with a photograph that they had brought with them from their country of origin. Then she photographed the picture surrounded by its new domestic environment. The series is a poignant and beautiful testament to the way that photographs serve as daily reminders of home and identity, particularly when their owners are removed from their original context.
