Inscriptions Entry 680 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Franklin Pierce- 14th President of U.S. Half-plate daguer. Pierce born & died in New Hampshire (1804-69). Father fought in Revolution & was gov. of N.H. Franklin graduated from Bowdoin, where he married daughter of College Pres. Jane Appleton. Became lawyer. U.S. Senator 1837. Enlisted as private during Mex War 1846. Made a Brigadier General by Pres. Polk. Distinguished solider, Nominated for Pres. against Gen. Winfield Scott in 1852 at Penn. Convention. Calif. purchased from Mexico & transcontinental railroad planned during his administration. Refused many offices, such as Gov. of N.H., member of U.S. Supreme Court, & U.S. Attorney General. From estate of John Ramage, famous Revolutionary miniature painter. Cost $50.00, or $100.00 for this & two following daguerreotypes of Seward & Marcy. From shop of Harry Stone, 555 Madison Ave. N.Y
