TextBefore Hollywood, the motion picture industry's home was Chicago. Companies such as Selig Polyscope (founded in 1896 by William Selig) and Essanay (founded in 1907 by George K. Spoor and Gilbert M. Anderson) produced and distributed films, while firms such as Bell and Howell (founded in 1907 by projectionists Donald Bell and Albert Howell) and Enterprise Optical (founded in 1895 by Alvah Roebuck) manufactured the hardware, cameras, projectors, and printers used by the local industry.
The Motiograph Deluxe was one of the last projectors designed specifically for silent movies. With a glass-enclosed projector head, gold pinstripes, and nickel-plated accent trim, it is one of the most beautiful projectors ever made.
