recto (printed): The Musket in the left hand, the arm slightly bent, the elbow back near the body, the palm of the hand pressing on the outer flat of the butt on the upper Joint of the fingers, the inside edge on lower joints of the fingers, ends of the fingers inside the heel of the butt between the fore and middle fingers, the thumb on the front screw of the butt plate, remaining fingers under the butt, the butt kept back according to the conformation of the soldier, so that the musket seen from side or front will appear perpendicular, and also that the movement of the thigh shall not cause the musket to waver; the stock below the tail band, resting against the hollow of the shoulder, the right arm hanging naturally.
