DescriptionFamily Album of James Campbell Esq. and his wife Caroline, containing 320 photographs. Carte-de-visite size images of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and each of their children are included in the opening pages of the album. However, one of Victoria's sons, Prince Alfred (1844-1900) is featured prominently in the album and in its companion (1972.0043*) and he seems to have been acquainted with James Campbell's son, Capt. Hugh Campbell of the Royal Navy, whose presence is also well documented in both albums. (#194 shows both men in the same image). Most images are arranged 6 per page, and include both pencil identifications and original signatures in ink, as well as some tiny colored insignia and crests which have been cut out and glued above some of the portraits. There are also views of the family home at Hampton Court, a small watercolor of the house and a photograph of a drawing of the estate. Included with this album are 17 loose albumen photographs ca. 1876, of Hamilton Parish, Bermuda, including a 7 plate panorama of Riddle Bay. There are also loose carte-de-visite and Cabinet Card images which seem later and do not correspond to portraits in the album. Cover of album is detached. 28 x 38 cm.
