DescriptionAlbum containing oval cut salted paper print student portraits, one per page, arranged in alphabetical order by last name. A printed list notes the names and hometowns of each of the 87 students. There are also individual portraits of nine faculty members and of President Mark Hopkins (who was president of the college from 1836 to 1872) as well as seven larger views of the Williamstown Massachusetts campus buildings. Nearly all of the portraits are inscribed in ink on the opposite page with autobiographical data, sentiments, literary quotes and advice to Edward A. Pierce, the original owner of this album and a member of the 1858 class. The last ten pages of the album are on different paper stock and include portraits of students not listed in the front page as members of the class of 1858. There is also a full page inscription at the end by a Kentucky classmate of Pierce, which is critical of New England abolitionist preachers. Covers are black with gold debossed lettering and decorative elements.
