Inscriptions Typed in black ink on applied label, verso BC: 12/61 5) CONGO FAMINE: In Kasai, thousands of Baluba refugees died \ between January and March before their S.O.S. for food received a response \ from the world. Ironically, their plight resulted from freedom. When \ the Congo became independent from Belgium, the Balubas were caught in \ the territory of a rival tribe. No longer protected by the colonials, the \ Balubas had to flee back home to South Kasai where a bad harvest and \ chaotic political conditions brought on famine.
