Entry 383 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Fine daguerreotype of Oswego, N.Y. taken from Steel engraving. Very clear and unusual detail when magnified. Shows port, bridges, steam and sail boats, homes & public buildings, piers, & men working. Steamboat, invented by Robt. Fulton in 1796. He built “Clermont” in 1806. Oswego is a port of entry of New York, county seat of Oswego Co, on Lake Ontario 35 miles northwest of Syracuse, at mouth of Oswego River. It is on the New York Central, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, and other railroads. It has municipally owned waterworks, stone & asphalt pavement, and system of electric street railways. Manufacturing facilitated by water power from Oswego River. Manufactures cotton & wool good, starch, oil, matches, boilers, hardware, liquor, and tools. Noteworthy buildings are county courthouse, high school, city hall, and Federal building. In seat of state normal school, state armory, & Gerritt Smith library. Harbor well protected by breakwater & lighthouse. Extensive jetties are at mouth of river. Settled first in 1720. Captured by French in 1756 and in 1812 by British. Chartered as city in 1848. Population (1905) 22,572. In 1920, 23,626. Daguerreotype probably made about 1848 from engraving made to celebrate being chartered as city. Very interesting. Fine case gutta percha signed “R.Paine.” Harp, angels, and arbor on front, altar, Bible opened to Lord’s Prayer on reverse in fine seal. From “Yesteryear” antique shop, Saugerties, N.Y. (5.30) It is made on real silver plate and has genuine gold mat. ($5.30)
