Inscribed in pen on applied paper on verso of frame, C: Ulysses Simpson Grant- 18th Pres. of U.S. \ Born Ohio, 1822. Died 1885. In Mar. 1864 \ he was given command of all Union forces. \ Forced Robt. E. Lee to surrender at Appomattox, \ April 9, 1865.\ Nominated pres. of Repub. convention \ May, 1868. Elected, & reelected in 1872. After \ close of 2nd term, he & his wife toured the world \ (1877-9.) An effort to nominate him again in \ 1880 for Pres. failed. Pacific railroads completed \ during his administration. Unfortunate choice \ of advisers and lack of skill in public affairs \ detracted from success of his administration. Far \ greater military success. Remains in magnificent \ tomb in Riverside Park, New York City, overlooking \ Hudson RIver. \ Married Julia Dent and they had 4 children; \ Frederick D. Grant, Ulysses S. Grant, Jr. \ Nellie Grant Sartoris Jones (Mrs. Frank H. Jones) \ Jesse R. Grant.

Entry 239 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Ulysses Simpson Grant, 18th Pres. of U.S. born Point Pleasant, Ohio, 1822, died 1885. Went to West Pt. when 17. Graduated 1843, On 1846 entered Mexican War under Scott & Taylor. Farmed & clerked bef. Mexican & Civil Wars. In 1862 he captured forts Henrty & Donelson. And fout Battle of Shiloh. Drove enemy to defeat at Vicksburg 1863, became Major general. In Mar. 1864 became lieut. Gen. & given command of all union forces. Fought Lee’s forces personally and Apr. 9, 1865, Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Republicans nominated him for Pres. 1868. Reelected in 1872, at close of 2nd term, 1877-9 he & wife went around world. Stronger military man than Pres. Howard end of life, lost money in banking enterprise in N.Y. city. Died of cancer 1885. Remains in Riverside Park New York City in magnificent tomb over-looking Hudson River. An effort to nominate him for Pres. in 1880 failed. 14.50.
