Inscriptions Entry 744 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Beautiful and rare tortoise shell case, pearl inlaid, in rare miniature size, case cost $ 12.50 (Twelve dollars & a half) contains Brady tintype of General Henry W. Halleck, Northern General of Civil War, who graduated from West Point. He was active during Mexican War in Calif. Became director of New Almaden[?] Quicksilver mine in San Jose in 1850. Resigned from Army in 1854 and practiced law in S.F. Built old S.F. Montgomery Block, which was called “Halleck’s Folly”, and which outlasted S.F. Earthquake & Fire. He was General in Chief of Northern army for a while early in Civil War at Wash. Along with rare valuable tortoise shell case which cost 12.50 the tintype is worth 20.00
