Inscriptions Entry 681 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Wm. Learned Marcy of N.Y. 1786-1857. Able lawyer. Fought in War of 1812. Judge of N.Y. State Supreme Court, 1829. U.S. Senator 1831. Where he originated saying “To the victors belong the spoils”. Governor of N.Y. 1833-1839. Sec. of War under Pres. Polk. 1845-1849. Sec. of State under Pres. Pierce, 1853-57. Able diplomat & statesman. Half-plate ambrotype. Cost about 20.00.
He may be in Bancroft Library since he arranged for purchase of Alaska, etc. from Russia. Also Fort Ross, etc. in California.
